Van Gogh
Sunflowers

Grade Level: 1st 

Media: Chalk pastels, glue drawings

 

Students will create chalk pastel glue drawings inspired by the famous artist Vincent van Gogh. They will draw a petal on a piece of tagboard to create their stencil and use that to draw their sunflowers. Then they will trace over their drawings with black Elmers glue. After it is dried they will add color to the petals using yellow and orange and use blending techniques using their fingers. Students will also add texture within the middle of their sunflowers using chalk pastels. Lastly, they will create a background using Vincent Van Goghs line work.

Drawing

Step 1: Students will draw from observation by looking at fake sunflowers in vases and hand-held sunflowers as well. 

Stencils

Step 2: Students will draw their petal using tagboard and cut them out to create a stencil to draw their sunflowers.

Glue Drawings

Step 3: Students will use black elmers glue to outline their lines from their stencils to create a 3D effect

Chalk Pastels

Step 4: Students will use blending methods to add color to their petals and adding texture in the middle of their sunflowers. Along with coloring the background blue.
