Oil Pastel Animals
Grade Level: High School
Media: Oil pastels, Colored Pencils
Students will learn about the art element texture and how it can be shown through lines. They will create oil pastel animal drawings that show texture through lines within their piece. Along with learning about Japanese woodblock floral prints that they used inspiration from to create a floral background for their animal.
Finding Reference
Step 1: Students will find a reference photo of the animal they want to create and trace it using Procreate on an iPad.
Projecting/Practice
Step 2: Students will use a projector to project their tracings from their iPads to trace their drawings using a white colored pencil. Then they will experiment with the oil pastels on test tiles.
Oil Pastel
Step 3: Students will use oil pastels demonstrating different techniques to create textures and lines to complete their animal drawing.
Critique
Students will participate in a formal critique with the collaboration of their peers and give feedback to improve their artwork.
Projecting
Step 4: Students will learn about Japanese woodblock floral prints that they will use as inspiration to create a background with different flowers of their choice.
Background
Step 5: Students will demonstrate oil pastel blending techniques to complete their floral backgrounds.
